Effects of drugs on potency dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction may result from long-term intake of certain drugs. Research shows that as many as 25% of erectile dysfunction cases may be related to drug side effects. Because of the often strong effects of some drugs, there may be disturbances in certain process cycles that are responsible for having sexual intercourse.

The serotonergic system plays a key role in the occurrence of erection. Unfortunately, most drugs affect its functioning, inhibiting the occurrence of erections. The group of drugs causing erectile dysfunction includes: drugs used in psychiatry, neuroleptics, antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs, antiepileptic drugs, preparations used in pharmacology of cardiovascular diseases, drugs used in urology and gastrenterology.

Other causes of potency disorder include

  • Taking medicines - adverse effects on sexual performance are caused by e.g. antihypertensive drugs, which are called thiazid diuretics and beta-blockers. Anti-arrhythmic drugs (digoxin, amiodarone) also have an extremely adverse effect. Other preparations that affect erectile dysfunction are antidepressants and drugs that affect the hormonal economy, such as ketoconazole, antiandrogens, gonadoliberine agonists.
  • Prostate diseases and cancer - one of the many causes of erectile dysfunction, which is one of the most dangerous for the health of the entire body. Treatment of prostate disease and cancer is associated with the implementation of strong drugs that make it drastically more difficult to achieve erection by reducing interest in sex life. Moreover, surgical treatment often causes damage to the blood vessels and nerves involved in the process.
  • Psychogenic disorders - a factor that most often occurs in people under 35 years of age. The main diagnostic element is the therapeutic treatment, which is associated with the conduct of subjective and physical examination.

It is believed that the most effective methods to reduce erectile dysfunction are natural aphrodisiacs in the form of essential oils, dried herbs and spices. In the past, sexual function disorders were treated with ambergris, tarantula extract, fly extract, ginseng extract, sandalwood extract, wasp larvae or hallucinogenic agents. Current pharmacological standards are based on the treatment of erectile dysfunction using: drugs reducing prolactin levels, PDE5 inhibitors, phosphodiesterase inhibitors and training methods, ending with psychotherapy.
